What is a 'n00b'?

A n00b is a term we use for members who:
A.) Ask dumb questions that can usually be solved by common sense, perhaps aimed with the intention of annoying members.
B.) Irritate members by stupid behavior, whether intentionally or unintentially...makes no difference to the other members on the client.
C.) Attempt to flame/insult well-respected members of soulseek. This is the one that classifies most n00bs, 75% of the time.

To be taken out of the catagory as a n00b, observe the behaviors of the other members. When you become known by the regular members, n00bish behavior will most likely be tolerated. But don't overdo it. -_-

Why do people ban me before the file finishes?

It all boils down ultimately on the user’s (whom you are downloading files from) preferences. Maybe he or she doesn’t like you or the username you picked. Maybe they don’t like the fact you’re a male or female. Maybe they had personal rules that you were expected to follow (usually found in their user info), and you violated them. You can be banned for all types of reasons on soulseek. Here is a list of a number of common rules by general users of soulseek:

1.) You MUST share files yourself.
Meaning, if they check your files after you queue up files from them and don’t have any files shared, you’ll more than likely be banned.

2.) You queue up too many files at once.
Should be self explanatory.

3.) You have a really slow connection.
Many users frown at any excess time it takes for other users to download files. 56k is a no-no for many users.

4.) Your computer can’t connect with the user you wish to download from (the transfer would keep saying ‘Failed’ without any progress if such) and you keep trying to queue it up.
There will most likely be other users in line of the same user you are trying to receive files from. Doing this takes up an unnecessary spot in line. Abort the file if this case happens and find it elsewhere.

All users have different sets of rules. It’s a good idea to check their user info before you download from them for any additional items. If you need more info on what their preferences are, then pm (private message) them and ask, otherwise being angered from being banned is not reasonable in the least.

What does 'Sharing by Userlist Only' mean?

Sharing Userlist Only means that they (the soulseek user) have a set list of other users that are solely allowed to download files from them. This is usually to prevent people they do not know from downloading many files from them on the client. Before you say “That’s not fair! It’s a file-sharing client and everyone should be allowed a turn!”, remember that this is a feature on the client itself….meaning the person who created soulseek made this option available. Soulseek users are not ultimately supposed to cater to you, rather than the whole community. Chances are, there is most likely another member who has the same file and is sharing it with everyone.

How do I make green(red) text?

This is probably one of the most asked questions by n00bs everywhere on soulseek. Listen, and listen good:

Green Text

Type in "/me" before you add in the action. Pretty easy, huh? So if your username is 'Jack' and you type in:

"/me finally knows how to make an action text!"

...you'll get this in the chat room:

* Jack finally knows how to make an action text!

For red text, the only way you can get that is by closing the chatroom window, and the ONLY people who will see the red text is the others in the chatroom. So...if another username is in red, that means the user is no longer inside the chatroom. NO, YOU CANNOT MAKE YOUR NAME IN RED AND STILL BE IN THE CHATROOM. It just doesn't happen...it's as simple as that. -_-

What is a bittorrent?

Already covered in this guide. You can find it here.

Why can't I see some people's files?

For most users, a large percentage of all the users of soulseek, as a whole, have computers that their own computers cannot connect to. Nothing can ultimately be done to fix this…it’s pretty much a mixed bag. Some users you can download files from, others you cannot. It’s an accepted part of soulseek. So don’t harass other members if you cannot view their files. It’s not their faults. Find the file elsewhere.

What does the Iggy (Ignore) Feature do?

Ignore means you won’t be able to see a user’s comments in chatrooms, nor will you be able to see any private messages they send you. They will, however see when you’re online and see whatever messages you type into chatrooms, unless they’ve ignored you as well. It is not like the ‘block’ option on most Instant Messaging programs where the blocked person would cease to know if you’re available or not.
